Kickin' arse with an ECO Kickball Team

Jess is getting a kickball team together. The more folks who sign up the more likely we are to have the minimum # of players for all our games. Sign up even if you can only make it out to a couple.

From Jen:
I am sure you have all gotten the email below by now, inviting you to
join the ECo department intramural kickball team. I just wanted to let
you know that if you sign up you don't have to make it to every game.
As long as we can get 8 players at every game we can still play.

The games are every wednesday at 6pm and the season is only one month
from Sep 20-October 25.

Field trip to Zero Energy Powerhouse

Greetings,
This past Thursday, March 25, 7 NRC grad students, several faculty and a number of Green Building Technology undergrads toured an exceptionally green home in Turners Falls, MA. We learned about it's wise site orientation, robust insulation, low-toxicity materials, ingenious window design and nifty technology. We would like to thank Tina and Doug (the homeowners) and Bick (the builder) for their great enthusiasm, knowledge, and friendliness. It was a truly eye-opening and inspiring experience. Below are some links to websites about the house (arguably the greenest in the US!) and green building resources more generally.

Travel Awards

Hey Ya'll,

Let's have a discussion about travel awards. A lot of us travel regionally, nationally, and internationally for conferences. How do you pay for it all? The college gives NRC a few travel awards each year but where do you get additional support from when your advisor doesn't have any money to help you out?

Really Big Show!

Hi all,

Just shamelessly plugging another upcoming show if anyone wants some laughs and general entertainment.

This show coming up is actually called the Really Big Show and is put on by the Northampton Arts Council every year. It goes up this Sunday, Feb 28th at 2pm at the Academy of Music in Northampton. This is a variety type show. It's family friendly, kids welcome and pretty much guaranteed to light up your weekend. There are a slew of groups performing and each is given a window of only 5 minutes to perform! Crazy.

It's a charity event to which all ticket proceeds go. Tix are $7 in advance (online or at various places in Northampton and Amherst), $10 at the door. You can find more info on the show at:

http://www.northamptonartscouncil.org/view/article/title/The_Really_Big_Show,_the_Final_Sunday_in_the_Feb_Series/id/7808?utm_s

I am performing with my troop BOOT, which some of you saw last month, and also with the August Company doing 'The Sound of Music in Five Minutes'.

Should be a rip roarin' knee-slappin' good time!

Wildlife Society seeking speakers

Patty, the president of the Wildlife Society just sent this email out to all graduate students asking for speakers for their club meetings:

Hey Grad students!
I was wondering if anyone would be interested in giving a talk for the Wildlife Society on the project they are working on. It would be great for any of you who need volunteers to come speak and hopefully you can get some through the Wildlife Society! (that is a maybe as participation has been very low) So if anyone is interested please let me know. We are having our meetings every other Wed. from now on. Hope to hear from some of you soon!

Welcome to the hey-wait-a-minute-it's-the-dead-of-winter 'Spring Semester'

Welcome back - and for the very first time - NRC graduate students! I hope the holiday break was a grand time for you and yours. A couple of notifications:

1. Our first Graduate Program meeting will continue to take place on the first Monday of each month, which means the next convening will happen on Monday, Feb. 1.

2. When you meet them, please extend a warm welcome to the new grad students who are just starting out this semester and point them in the direction of the blog so that they can wrap themselves in the warm, fuzzy feeling that is a virtual community . . . fine, shake their hand, too.

3. Amy Koske's improv comedy group, BOOT, will be performing next Friday evening at 7pm in Northampton. It's on the calendar. I suggest that any interested parties band together for some pre- and post-improv drinking and good-timing. Let me know if you'd like to join me for some haha.

As always, send events, photos, questions, concerns and comments umassnrcgrads@gmail.com.

Copenhagen Climate Summit: Show your support for action at a local Climate vigil Friday PM

Two vigils are taking place this Friday, Dec 11, in the 5 Colleges area to demonstrate solidarity with those in Copenhagen on the front lines of crafting a global climate treaty. Show your support by bringing yourself, a candle and some pals to either of the following locations:

4:30-5:30pm Amherst Commons
5:30-6:30pm outside of First Church in downtown Northampton (129 Main St)

I'm going to try to make it to the Noho vigil after the OEB seminar.

Cheers! ~tyler

Ok, grad students, time to sign up for the end-of-the-semester party at ABC Brewing Co in the main office. If you don't do it by this Wednesday, Dec. 2, our department head may lose his.
